Two high school coaching legends who made the biggest impacts in their careers in Gwinnett County have been selected for the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, the Macon-based organization announced Thursday.


Longtime Brookwood head football coach and athletic director Dave Hunter and former Collins Hill and Norcross head girls basketball coach Angie Hembree are part of the Hall’s Class of 2027, the latest honors in decorated careers for both.

Hunter was previously inducted into the Gwinnett County Sports Hall of Fame in 2013, the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame and Georgia Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame in 2018, the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame in 2019 and was an inaugural member of the Brookwood High School Football Hall of Fame in 2025.


Hembree was inducted into the Gwinnett County Sports Hall of Fame in 2019, the same year she was named to the Norcross High School Foundation Hall of Fame.

Hunter made the biggest mark of his career in education at Brookwood, which he built into a powerhouse as head football coach. He is widely credited for bringing a successful football model to the county, both on the field and through fundraising for first-class facilities.

He accomplished a number of firsts for Gwinnett football programs, including a 1996 state championship that was the first for a team from the Gwinnett County Public Schools system. He went 149-35 as head coach from 1987 to 2001, when he retired from football. His career record was 176-52-1, including time at Peachtree in neighboring DeKalb County.

Hunter also headed up the Broncos’ successful programs as athletic director from 1987 until his full retirement in 2006. Outside of Brookwood, he served on the Georgia High School Association’s Executive Committee for 25 years and was executive director of the Gwinnett Touchdown Club for years. He also was co-founder and longtime executive director of the annual Corky Kell Classic high school football showcase.

The majority of Hembree’s 32 years of high school coaching came in Gwinnett, first as a Meadowcreek assistant and later in highly successful tenures as the head girls coach at Collins Hill and Norcross. She won 529 career games as a head coach, as well as six state championships — three at Collins Hill and three at Norcross.

Between those two jobs, she coached college basketball at Miami (Fla.).


At Norcross, she won 2010, 2011 and 2013 state championships, finished as state runner-up in 2015 and 2017, and made the Final Four in 2012.

Along the way, Hembree coached some of the best basketball talent Georgia has produced, including WNBA stars like Maya Moore and Diamond DeShields. Her success also has been recognized nationally — she has coached with USA Basketball and was a head coach in the prestigious McDonald’s All-American Game in 2014.

The Class of 2027 also includes Braves legend Brian Snitker, Atlanta’s manager from 2016 to 2025 and a 2021 World Series champion. Snitker was a longtime Gwinnett resident during his nearly 50 years with the Braves organization. He is joined in the class by former Braves standout Terry Pendleton.

The other inductees include former Georgia football and NFL players Terrence Edwards and Richard Seymour, legendary Atlanta Falcons lineman Mike Kenn, former Georgia All-American tennis player Allen “Ace” Miller, longtime Georgia Tech golf coach Bruce Heppler and Georgia Southern and MLB baseball player Todd Greene.
